It was a couple months ago now that my friend Thomas Nguyen came to me with an idea. He had done a shoot with his model crew that focused on true beauty. The shoot involved no makeup and no retouching. It focused on natural beauty rather than what is depicted so often in social media with this unrealistic expectation for how individuals are supposed to look and act, which has become toxic to one’s self-image. Thomas wanted me to become involved with this shoot that has since evolved into what he calls Project Beauty and is now going to involve 200+ high school senior photographers and their seniors from across the nation.

The mission behind Project Beauty is to emphasize natural, true beauty. So often teens are bombarded with imagery of what society perceives as beautiful. It is often unrealistic, unattainable and damaging to how teens view themselves. It becomes a reason for them to doubt their self-image when there’s no need to. With Project Beauty, the goal of the shoot is to capture teens and allow them to see that they can be beautiful while they’re not wearing makeup.

This shoot has been beyond what I expected. Coming into the shoot, many of the girls were extremely hesitant and didn’t know how it was going to turn out. It’s scary getting in front of the camera without any makeup. However, after the shoot, the girls came out feeling confident, empowered and realized that their self-worth is not determined by how much makeup they wear. I am so proud of the individuals who took part in this shoot and are helping to lead a nationwide movement.

Project Beauty is a movement that I am proud to be part of and thrilled the individuals from the SBP Senior Rep Team decided to take part in it.
