Eliana’s senior session was one of those sessions where everything came together beautifully, even when things didn’t go exactly as planned. During her session, we had some wildfire haze in the area, which is something many seniors worry about when scheduling senior pictures in the late summer and early fall. The good news is that haze can sometimes create some of the most beautiful light. Instead of harsh sunlight, we were treated to a soft golden glow that gave her entire gallery a warm, dreamy feel.
We started the session at one of my favorite locations, a Mediterranean-inspired spot that feels like something you would find much farther from the Pacific Northwest. Eliana wore a black top and jean skirt, which paired perfectly with the warm tones and unique character of the location. I love starting sessions in spots like this because it gives seniors a completely different look before we head into nature for the rest of the evening.
From there, we made our way to the fields and one of my favorite white barns, which has become a favorite location for so many seniors over the years. One thing I’ve learned after photographing hundreds of senior portraits is that simple locations often create some of the most timeless images. The open fields, soft light, and classic barn backdrop always photograph beautifully no matter the season.
Eliana brought several different dresses for this part of the session, including a small floral print dress, a light pink dress, and a lace dress with beautiful texture. Each outfit brought something different to the gallery while still fitting perfectly with the natural surroundings. The floral dress felt light and playful in the open fields, while the pink dress looked incredible with the soft golden light filtering through the haze. The lace dress added a little extra texture and elegance and worked so well against the rustic backdrop of the barn.
As the sun got lower, the haze continued to create the most amazing glow across the fields. It was one of those evenings where the light just kept getting better and better. Sometimes the conditions that seem less than ideal end up creating some of the most memorable images, and this session was a perfect example of that.
One thing I always tell seniors planning their senior pictures in Vancouver, Washington and Portland, Oregon is not to panic if the weather or conditions aren’t exactly what you expected. After years of photographing high school senior portraits throughout the Pacific Northwest, I’ve learned that being flexible and working with what the day gives us often leads to something even better.
Eliana, thank you so much for trusting me with your senior portraits! It was such a fun evening exploring these locations with you and creating such a beautiful variety of images. I hope you have the most amazing senior year and make memories that last a lifetime!
