How to Get Your Images Right In-Camera

How to Shoot Good Straight Out of Camera Images Photography Education Sean Brown

I love getting my images right in-camera! It helps save me time, the clients love being able to see how their images look before even being edited and it ultimately ensures that you’re doing things right during your session – lighting, settings, etc.

During every session, I make sure to try and get my images as close to the final output as I can.

Here are the three things that I do to make sure that I get my images perfect in camera!

How to Use a Reflector Photography Education Sean Brown Productions

Use a Reflector

For 9/10 senior shoots, I am using a reflector! I love the large 42×72” reflector from Impact personally because it has a white/silver side where I can flip it over and go from white to silver or vice versa without having to unzip it. The reason that I use a reflector is that it makes the eyes pop. This is great for getting your in-camera image perfect since it ensures you’re lighting your subject properly and don’t have to go back and brighten dark circles under the subject’s eye or anything like that. Plus, it brings some life to your photo whereas if there isn’t a catch light the eyes can look dull.

Not Overexposing Your Subject

When I am shooting, I almost always expose properly for my subject. There are times where I may underexpose for certain reasons, but I NEVER overexpose my subject. The reason for this is because once your highlights are blown – caused by overexposing – you have lost important information in your image. It is much better to underexpose or properly expose for your subject so that you can retain as much detail as possible. I am ok with blowing highlights in the sky, but this is just the style I have adapted. This depends on your style, but overexposing your subject is always a bad idea.

Using Professional Hair & Makeup

For all of my senior shoots, I make sure that my clients have professional hair and makeup done. The reason for this is that I trust my hair and makeup artists to know how their makeup will work in certain lighting conditions, that their foundation matches the rest of their skin tone and to make sure that their curls hold the entire time. This allows us to go on-location for a couple hours and for everything to hold up. The times that I have not used professional hair and makeup, there has been a lot more retouching that’s needed to be done and sometimes even fixing hair like flyaways.

These are just a couple things that I do when shooting a senior session to help my images come as close to how I envision them as possible.
