Not Getting Repetitive on Social Media

Trust me, I know. It’s super easy to hit that “Share to Twitter and Facebook” button when you’re posting to Instagram.

DON’T. It’s repetitive, doesn’t bring any value to your followers and, ultimately, everything you do should be what is best for your followers.

By posting the same exact post on every social media platform, you’re simply using each platform as a distribution network rather than a communication platform. It took me a while to figure it out and once I did, my approach to creating meaningful social media content changed drastically! The key is to create great content that is different for each platform.

So let’s dive into how you can accomplish that!

How Can You Tell Your Story Differently

The big thing is simply thinking about how you can be telling your story slightly differently for each platform. What message are you trying to communicate? What value are you trying to bring to your followers? What kinds of content and imagery can you post to accomplish these goals?

This could be a different image, different copy, speaking to a different audience and more. Each time you post a new piece of content and change up its message, it allows you the opportunity to connect with your audience on a deeper level. You never know how one specific sentence or phrase is going to resonate with one person that had you used the same message and image across every social media platform would have flown over that person’s head.

Using Each Platform Properly

Not all platforms were created equal! Instagram was built as a photo sharing application versus Facebook that was built as a text-first online connection tool. People are programmed subconsciously to respond differently to each platform and therefore each post should be different too!

Since each platform is different, your posts should be too. Think about what content you like on each platform. What do you respond to positively on Facebook versus Snapchat? Are there ways that you use each platform differently such as passive engagement (e.g. liking an image) or active engagement (e.g. commenting, adding your two cents)? By analyzing what you are personally doing, I find that this is the most effective way of getting a feel for what content does well. However, sometimes we’re not the best judge of that! If you’re not, ask some of your past clients what types of content they prefer on each social media platform. After all, they are a great judge of what they like! 🙂

Look Back at What You’ve Done Well

So now that we’ve tried creating new content on social media, it’s time to check how it’s going! After posting different kinds of content, I always recommend going back and seeing what posts are performing well. Is there a specific type of image that people are responding to more positively? Was there a certain caption or copy that you used where everyone had to comment on?

Looking at your audience’s reaction is a phenomenal way to make sure that you are staying on-point with providing content that is relevant. If not, it’s time to go back to the drawing board and figuring out what may work better. Don’t get discouraged in this phase! All information is good information. Keep a positive mindset and always keep in mind that you learned what things worked well and what didn’t.

Sometimes breaking habits of wanting to post in your normal way can be hard, but it’s worth it. Practice makes perfect and once you do this consistently it will become second nature! I want to know how you’re doing! Are you doing this well already or are there changes you want to make? Head over to Instagram and shoot me a message to let me know! I’d love to hear how I can help you!
